Vid Sleuths track wanted tapes

What was Elvis Presley's first movie? Is it available on cassette?

In what movie did Tom Cruise make his screen debut - and can you get it on tape?

I've (happily) answered questions like those for years. And for years, I've consoled desolate readers who want to purchase the tape of a certain movie only to be told by a video-shop clerk, "Ya can't get it. It's outta print. It's sold out, and we can't reorder. Too bad, but we don't do special ordering." Now the video gods have smiled on all of us.

A Million and One World-Wide Videos rides to the rescue. They're video detectives based in Georgia, and honey chile, they buy, sell, trade, rent, broker and auction every video in the world.

Give them your wants, or provide them with some clues, and they'll search for your title free. I asked: "Free? We expect to pay for the tapes, but you'll track down a movie if I give you a clue, such as "I'd like a tape of the movie in which Jack Lemmon sold real estate' and you'll do the research without charge?"

Absolutely, W-W V assured me. "What we do require is a firm bid or order with the customer's credit card, and of course, we prefer the title and the star or director's name. But we also track down remote tapes.

"And if the customer can recall the title but can't remember the star or the director, they can mail us $10.00 and we'll mail back the titles of all that star's or director's films."

Since the invention of the movie camera, over 100 years ago, probably millions of films have been made. Whatever the number, at any given moment, less than 5 percent are actively marketed on tape. Those are available from most dealers.

World-Wide Videos specializes in tracking down the 95 percent of titles that are inactive and so are hard to find. I asked: "Where in the world [a logical phrase, considering the company's name] do you find the cassettes?"

"Literally, everywhere. Our staff checks every published source, every catalog, every video and collectors' publication...and we have built up a worldwide network of collectors from whom we obtain titles. If the source is in the United States, delivery time is about a month. Overseas, of course, is longer."

They also locate videos about your special interest: business, hobby, how-to, documentaries, etc. For a list of 435 topics, send $10.00. Not so incidentally, such fees are applied to your next order.

To contact A Million and One World-Wide Videos from the United States or Canada, call (800) 849-7309. the fax number is (800) 849-0873. By mail: W-W V, Orchard Hill, GA 30266-0349.

Before phoning, have your title, star or director's name handy, plus your credit card.

Bottom Line Personal
...and your leisure

Hard-to-find videotapes. Video detective agency searches...a net-work of over 26,000 collectors to find...videos. It even looks overseas for videos never released in the U.S.

If the video is not located, there is no charge. Each customer must agree to a price that he/she will pay for a video before the company will start a search. Success rate: 90%. More information: A Million and One World-Wide Videos, 800 849-7309.
